A Going-Wide Perspective on the KU versus Wide Debate.

A short post I wrote for Kobo Writing Life just popped up on their blog, here, entitled “How Going Wide Helped Me Quit My Day Job”.

It’s not completely unrelated to productivity.  As David Gaughran recently pointed out in his post:  “A Tale of Two Marketing Systems,” Wide authors and KU Authors are beginning to show signs of polarizing.  Knowing which camp you’re in — or want to be in — will affect what you write, how you write it and how much time you can spend doing it.

If you love marketing and networking and the rush of a book launch, if you love pulp fiction, then KU might be for you.

On the other hand, if you’re one of those writers who secretly wishes they could pull the rug over their heads to shut out the world and go back to writing, while someone else takes care of the messy stuff, then going wide is as close as you can get to that ideal, these days — everything is low key and based on multiple streams (trickles) of income, which you can build up over time instead of having to burst upon the charts.
