We’re sold the pixie dust version of success. You know the one. Cue the swelling orchestra. The montage. The triumphant smile as everything finally clicks into place. Success arrives looking polished, confident, and inevitable.

Real life doesn’t work like that. Real success is often downright ugly. It sounds more like this:

• “Well…that was a near thing.”
• “I have no idea how we made payroll again.”
• “The house is a disaster, but everyone’s fed.”
• “I gained two pounds, but I’m still thirty pounds lighter than I was.”
• “The manuscript got written, but the process was pure goblin chaos.”

The outcome is a success. The experience doesn’t feel successful at all. And because it doesn’t feel elegant, we discount it. We assume we must be doing something wrong.

The Problem with the Success Story

We’ve absorbed the idea that success should feel like confidence. That if we’re succeeding, we should know what we’re doing by now. We should be organized. Calm. Productive. Certain.

Instead, most of us feel like we’re patching holes in a leaky boat while desperately trying to remember where we put the duct tape.

Especially writers.

Books don’t appear because the muse showed up every morning at precisely 9:00. They get written between illnesses, family commitments, day jobs, financial worries, self-doubt, and the occasional desire to throw the entire manuscript into the nearest volcano.

Newsletters go out with the odd typo. Launches aren’t perfect. Marketing plans are improvised.

Some months are brilliant. Some months are simply…survived. Yet over the years, something remarkable happens. The books accumulate, readers arrive, your career grows.  Not because everything went smoothly, but because you kept going.

The Achievement Nobody Sees

People only see the finished book. They don’t see the mornings when writing for twenty minutes was all you had in you. They don’t see the chapters rewritten three times, or the weeks when life happened and you wondered if you’d ever find your rhythm again.

From the outside, success looks tidy. From the inside, it’s often held together with coffee, determination, and whatever emotional equivalent of duct tape was available that week.

That’s ugly success. And it counts.

In fact, it may be the only kind that really exists.

A Different Way to Read the Evidence

It’s easy to tell yourself: “I’ve been wobbling for years.”  But there’s another way to tell the same story:  “I’ve been wobbling for years…and somehow I’ve kept moving forward.”

Those aren’t the same story. One is about inadequacy, and the other is about resilience. That’s the achievement we rarely celebrate because nobody sees it.

No one hands out medals for paying the bills during difficult seasons, or gives ribbons for writing through grief, illness, exhaustion, or uncertainty. No one applauds the author who quietly shows up again after a disappointing launch.

But maybe they should. Because those moments are what careers—and lives—are actually built from.  If there were awards for ugly success, I imagine the citation would read something like this:

Despite uncertainty, fatigue, imperfect circumstances, administrative nonsense, financial stress, self-doubt, unexpected setbacks, and the complete absence of a stirring orchestral soundtrack, the recipient persisted.

I suspect many of us would qualify. And perhaps that’s worth remembering the next time your own success doesn’t feel very successful.

The goal isn’t a perfect journey. The goal is to keep moving.

Sometimes the greatest achievement isn’t looking like you’ve got it all together. It’s discovering that you kept going even when you clearly didn’t.

That’s ugly success.

And it’s still success.
